Mount Oldonyo Lengai Overview
Mount Oldonyo Lengai, located in the East African Rift Valley in Tanzania, is an active stratovolcano that holds cultural and geological significance. Its name, in the Maasai language, translates to “Mountain of God.” Standing at an elevation of approximately 2,960 meters (9,711 feet), Oldonyo Lengai is the only known active carbonatite volcano in the world, erupting with a unique lava composition rich in sodium and potassium carbonates.
What sets Oldonyo Lengai apart from other volcanoes is its distinctive black natrocarbonatite lava, which has a lower temperature compared to typical silicate lava. The cooler lava flows quickly solidify and take on a unique grayish color, making the landscape around the volcano visually striking.
