The 6-day Machame Route is a challenging and scenic Kilimanjaro itinerary designed for trekkers who want to reach Uhuru Peak while completing the route in six days. The trek passes through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800 m – 3,000 m Distance: Approximately 11 km

Hiking time: 5–7 hours Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration and preparation. The trek begins through the lush rainforest, where you may see monkeys and a variety of birdlife.

The trail gradually climbs through the forest toward Machame Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 3,000 m – 3,840 m Distance: Approximately 5 km Hiking time: 4–6 hours Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, continue climbing through the moorland zone toward the Shira Plateau. The forest gradually disappears, revealing expansive views of the surrounding landscape and Mount Meru.

Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon and enjoy time to rest and acclimatize.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,840 m – 4,630 m – 3,960 m Distance: Approximately 10 km

Hiking time: 6–8 hours Habitat: Semi-desert

Today is an important acclimatization day. You climb toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,630 m before descending to Barranco Camp.

The route follows the principle of “climb high, sleep low,” helping your body adjust to the increasing altitude. You will enjoy dramatic views of the Barranco Wall and the volcanic landscape surrounding Kilimanjaro.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3,960 m – 4,035 m – 4,640 m Distance: Approximately 9 km

Hiking time: 7–9 hours Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, climb the famous Barranco Wall before continuing through a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga Valley.

After a short break, continue toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit. On arrival, your guide will give you a summit briefing and help you prepare your equipment. You will have an early dinner and go to bed early in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640 m – 5,895 m – 3,080 m Distance: Approximately 17 km

Hiking time: 12–15 hours Habitat: Arctic / Alpine desert

Around midnight, you begin your summit attempt. The climb to Stella Point is steep and demanding, with a slow ascent over rocky and scree-covered terrain.

After reaching Stella Point, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning the descent.

Descend toward Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp, where you will have dinner and rest after this long and rewarding day.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3,080 m – 1,640 m Distance: Approximately 10 km Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. At the gate, complete the park formalities and receive your summit certificates. You will then be transferred by vehicle to your hotel, marking the end of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
