The 7-day Rongai Route is a scenic and quieter trail approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side. It offers gradual acclimatization through diverse landscapes, from forest and moorland to alpine desert. The extra day allows more time to adjust to the altitude before the summit climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). After reaching the summit, descend through the Marangu Route to complete your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Elevation: 2,020 m to 2,625 m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate for registration and preparation. The trek begins through farmland before entering the montane forest. The trail is gentle and provides a good introduction to the mountain. Continue through the forest to Simba Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Elevation: 2,625 m to 3,679 m
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
After breakfast, continue through the moorland zone as the vegetation becomes thinner and the mountain scenery opens up. The trail gradually gains altitude, with beautiful views of the surrounding plains and Kilimanjaro. Continue toward Kikelelwa Cave Camp, where you will rest and enjoy dinner.
Elevation: 3,679 m to 4,330 m
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Today's trek is shorter but involves a steady climb toward the spectacular Mawenzi massif. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you gain altitude. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp in the afternoon and enjoy time to relax and acclimatize while taking in the dramatic mountain scenery.
Elevation: Around 4,330 m Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
Today is dedicated to acclimatization. After breakfast, take a short hike toward the lower slopes of Mawenzi Ridge, gaining some additional altitude before returning to camp to sleep lower. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to the altitude while keeping the hiking distance manageable. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the higher stages of the climb.
Elevation: 4,330 m to 4,703 m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the high-altitude Saddle toward Kibo. The terrain changes to an open alpine desert with very little vegetation. Arrive at Kibo Camp in the afternoon and have lunch before resting. An early dinner is served, followed by sleep in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.
Elevation: 4,703 m to 5,895 m to 3,720 m
Distance: 16–18 km Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Wake around midnight and begin the challenging summit ascent. The climb is slow and steady over steep volcanic terrain, eventually reaching Gilman's Point on the crater rim. Continue toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating at the summit and taking photographs, begin the descent to Kibo Camp for a short rest. Continue down to Horombo Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night. This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek.
Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,860 m
Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
After breakfast, begin the final descent through the moorland and lush montane forest. Continue to Marangu Gate, where you will complete the park exit formalities and receive your summit certificate. Meet your vehicle at the gate and transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower, relaxation, and celebration of your successful Kilimanjaro climb.
