Overview
The 6-day Umbwe Route is a challenging and scenic trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southern side. Known for its steep and adventurous terrain, the route passes through lush forest, moorland, and alpine desert before joining the Southern Circuit. The extra day provides better acclimatization before the summit attempt, increasing the opportunity for a successful climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate for registration. The trek begins through farmland and dense montane forest. The trail is steep from the start, with roots and narrow paths adding to the adventure. Continue climbing steadily to Umbwe Camp, where you will have dinner and overnight.

Leave Umbwe Camp and continue through thinning forest toward the moorland zone. The trail becomes more open, offering impressive views of Kilimanjaro's rugged landscape. Continue toward the Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon, with views of the impressive Barranco Wall and surrounding peaks.

After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall. Although steep, the climb is manageable with the help of your guide. From the top, enjoy panoramic views before continuing through alpine desert terrain toward Karanga Camp. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing.

Today's trek takes you higher toward Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren. Arrive at camp for lunch and spend the afternoon resting. After an early dinner, prepare for the midnight summit climb.

Wake around midnight and begin the demanding ascent toward Uhuru Peak. Climb slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, begin the descent through the Mweka Route to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the lush montane forest toward Mweka Gate. At the gate, complete the park exit procedures and collect your summit.
