The 6-day Rongai Route is one of the quieter and more scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the northeastern side near the Tanzania–Kenya border, the route offers a gradual ascent through several distinct ecological zones. The Rongai Route is particularly attractive for trekkers who prefer a less crowded trail and want to experience Kilimanjaro from a different perspective.
Elevation: 2,020 m to 2,625 m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate for registration and preparation. The trek begins through farmland before entering the montane forest. The trail is gentle, allowing you to settle into the mountain environment. After a few hours of hiking, arrive at Simba Camp for dinner and overnight.
Elevation: 2,625 m to 3,679 m
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
After breakfast, continue climbing through the moorland zone. The forest gradually becomes thinner, opening up to beautiful views of the surrounding plains and Kilimanjaro's peaks. The trail becomes steeper toward the end of the day as you approach Kikelelwa Cave Camp, where you will rest and prepare for the next stage.
Elevation: 3,679 m to 4,330 m
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Today is a shorter but steeper hike toward the impressive Mawenzi massif. The landscape becomes more rugged as you gain altitude. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp in the afternoon, giving you time to relax and acclimatize while enjoying spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak.
Elevation: 4,330 m to 4,703 m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the high-altitude Saddle toward Kibo. The landscape is now mainly alpine desert with very little vegetation. Arrive at Kibo Camp in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day resting. An early dinner is followed by sleep in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.
Elevation: 4,703 m to 5,895 m to 3,720 m
Distance: 16–18 km Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Wake around midnight and begin the challenging ascent toward Uhuru Peak. The climb is slow and steady, passing Gilman's Point before continuing around the crater rim toward the summit. Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, where you can celebrate and take photographs.
After the summit, descend to Kibo Camp for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Camp. This is a long and demanding day, so proper pacing and hydration are essential.
Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,860 m
Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
After breakfast, begin the final descent through the moorland and lush montane forest. Continue to Marangu Gate, where you complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate. You will then meet your vehicle and transfer back to Moshi for a well-earned rest after your Kilimanjaro adventure.
