The 7-day Machame Route is one of the most scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers spectacular landscapes, excellent acclimatization, and a gradual ascent through several distinct ecological zones.
Elevation: 1,800 m – 3,000 m Hiking time: 5–7 hours Distance: Approximately 11 km Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you will drive to Machame Gate for registration and final preparations. The trek begins through the lush montane rainforest, where you may encounter colobus and blue monkeys.
The trail gradually climbs through the forest to Machame Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Overnight: Machame Camp Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Elevation: 3,000 m – 3,840 m Hiking time: 4–6 hours Distance: Approximately 5 km Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue along a steeper trail toward the Shira Plateau. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the moorland zone.
You will enjoy beautiful views of Mount Meru and, weather permitting, your first impressive views of Kibo, Kilimanjaro's highest peak.
Overnight: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Elevation: 3,840 m – 4,630 m – 3,960 m Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Distance: Approximately 10 km Habitat: Semi-desert
Today is an important acclimatization day. You climb toward Lava Tower at around 4,630 m before descending to Barranco Camp. The principle is “climb high, sleep low,” allowing your body to begin adapting to the increasing altitude.
The descent into the Barranco Valley offers spectacular views of the Barranco Wall and surrounding volcanic landscape.
Overnight: Barranco Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Elevation: 3,960 m – 4,035 m Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: Approximately 6 km Habitat: Alpine desert
After breakfast, you tackle the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks intimidating, the climb is manageable with the help of your guide.
After reaching the top, the trail continues through valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp. This is a relatively short day, giving you valuable time to rest and prepare for the summit.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Elevation: 4,035 m – 4,640 m Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: Approximately 4 km Habitat: Alpine desert
Today's trek takes you toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you ascend into the alpine desert zone. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, your guide will provide a summit briefing and help you prepare your equipment for the night ahead.
You will have an early dinner and go to bed early, as the summit attempt begins around midnight.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Elevation: 4,640 m – 5,895 m – 3,080 m Hiking time: 12–15 hours
Distance: Approximately 17 km Habitat: Arctic / Alpine desert
You will wake around midnight and begin the summit attempt. The climb to Stella Point is steep and demanding, with the trail winding slowly up the scree slopes toward the crater rim.
After reaching Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
Take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the incredible views before beginning the descent.
You descend through the Barafu area and continue down to Mweka Camp, where you will have dinner and rest.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Elevation: 3,080 m – 1,640 m Hiking time: 3–4 hours Distance: Approximately 10 km Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the beautiful rainforest to Mweka Gate. At the gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificates. Your vehicle will then transfer you back to your hotel.
End of the trek.
