Overview
The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular routes up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is ideal for adventurous climbers looking for a more challenging trek, with diverse landscapes ranging from rainforest to alpine desert. The 7-day option allows for better acclimatization, increasing the chances of reaching the summit while offering some of the mountain’s most breathtaking views.


Day 1: Moshi – Machame Camp
Transfer to Kilimanjaro National Park and begin your ascent through lush rainforest. Trek for 5–6 hours, spotting wildlife along the way, before reaching Machame Camp.
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp
Hike through moorland terrain as the forest fades, arriving at Shira Camp with stunning views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Climb to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. This day helps your body adjust to altitude while offering dramatic scenery.
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, followed by a moderate trek to Karanga Camp. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing.
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Continue through alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. Rest and prepare for the night climb.
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Begin the summit push after midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak (5,985m) at sunrise. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Moshi/Arusha
Descend through forest trails to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate, and return to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
